Digital Object Identifiers

Digital Object Identifiers (DOIs) are persistent identifiers which can be used to consistently and accurately reference digital objects and/or content. The DOIs provide a way for the ADS resources to be cited in a similar fashion to traditional scholarly materials. More information on DOIs at the ADS can be found on our help page.

Overview

Background to the Project

The Aggregates Levy Sustainability Fund (ALSF) administered by English Heritage funded The Aggregate Landscape of Gloucestershire project. Gloucestershire has a range of geological resources used as aggregates, primarily two areas of limestone (one in the Forest of Dean and one in the Cotswolds) and the sand and gravel deposits of the river valleys. The main aim of the project was to improve the amount and quality of archaeological information regarding the aggregate producing areas, in order to inform decisions regarding the likely impact of aggregates extraction at future Minerals Local Plan reviews, reviews of existing minerals planning permissions (ROMPs) and assessments of new applications for minerals planning permission.

This project provided an opportunity to construct a strategic overview of both the extent and character of the aggregate deposits in the county, and the archaeological resource in these areas. The enhanced understanding will inform future decision making on priorities for the preservation of nationally important archaeological sites through designation and the management of archaeological sites through the minerals planning process. Other project outputs include a research framework to inform future decision-making, and an opportunity to develop a better awareness of archaeological issues within the minerals industry and with the general public.

This report was originally compiled in 2005, but minor edits have been made as a result of a conference held in December 2006 at which Aggregate Archaeology Surveys for Gloucestershire, Warwickshire and Worcestershire were presented and discussed. In addition, this revised report does not take into account work undertaken or published since March 2005, including the South West Archaeological Research Framework (SWARF).

The Digital Archive

The archive comprises the following:

  • A digital pdf copy of the final edited report; originally produced as a Word document.
  • Digital pdf copies of the accompanying illustrations for the report (85 in all); originally produced as Adobe Illustrator (ai) files.

In addition, the report and illustrations are available as a public-accessible document on the Gloucestershire County Council Archaeology Service website at:

http://www.gloucestershire.gov.uk/utilities/action/act_download.cfm?mediaid=13349

Non-digital Archive and Publications

In addition to the digital information noted above, The Aggregate Landscape of Gloucestershire project also resulted in the following non-digital outputs:

Published papers
Mullins, D. 2006. The aggregate landscape of Gloucestershire: predicting the archaeological resource. The Archaeologist 61: 44-45.
Lectures/meetings
English Heritage stipulated that there should be peer review of the report and also academic public presentation of the results from the Gloucestershire ALSF project, and a similar project for Worcestershire. The conference was held at University of Worcester on Saturday 25th November 2006, co-ordinated by Rachel Edwards of Arboretum Archaeological Consultancy. It was attended by a good cross-section of archaeologists from many different backgrounds (university departments, HERs, field units and others), and the discussion resulted in productive critical feedback, most of it positive.
