Digital Object Identifiers

Digital Object Identifiers (DOIs) are persistent identifiers which can be used to consistently and accurately reference digital objects and/or content. The DOIs provide a way for the ADS resources to be cited in a similar fashion to traditional scholarly materials. More information on DOIs at the ADS can be found on our help page.

Overview

The ICRATES database offers detailed information of 33939 published tableware sherds that can be reused for research purposes. Each entry in the database can be uniquely cited, and the dataset can be linked with other datasets based on the places where sherds were found by using the Pleiades reference for each place.

The database does not aim to be a complete collection of all tableware collected through excavation and surface survey, the limited practice of published fully quantified ceramic datasets from the region makes this impossible. Rather, it aims to be representative of the published tableware sherds from the region, incorporating as much information as is published including fabric and typological and chronological identification. This makes ICRATES the ideal resource for studying changes in the distribution of tablewares in the Roman East as well as in the diversity of wares at sites.

The database consists of seven tables:

  1. ICRATES catalogue table (33939 entries): This is the main table in the database which holds a single entry for each tableware sherd listing detailed information about the sherd. This table also includes a link to all other tables to include the publication, location, deposit and typology associated with each sherd.
  2. ICRATES location table (275 entries): Information about each site for which tableware is included in the Catalogue table. This is also the table that allows for linking the ICRATES data with other datasets by using the Pleiades references. The vast majority of locations are in the Eastern Mediterranean regions, with a few sites in the Western Mediterranean and further east as far as India.
  3. ICRATES publication table (359 entries): Information about each publication from which published tableware evidence was recorded in the Catalogue table.
  4. ICRATES deposit table (4193 entries): Information about each archaeological deposit in which tableware included in the Catalogue table was found.
  5. ICRATES standard form table (1397 entries): typological and chronological information for the major tableware typologies for the following ware: ESA, ESB, ESC, ESD, Çandarli, ITS, ARSW, CRSW, PRSW.
  6. ICRATES OCK table (363 entries): chronological information of ITS stamps.
  7. ICRATES LRP table (194 entries): chronological information about Late Roman pottery stamps for the following wares: ARSW, CRSW, PRSW.
