Introduction

Building the evidence base for Historic Farmsteads in Greater Lincolnshire

The Building the Evidence base for Historic Farmsteads in Greater Lincolnshire Project provides a county-wide study of the character and survival of the historic farmsteads of the historic county of Lincolnshire (including the administrative areas of Lincolnshire County Council, North Lincolnshire Council and North-East Lincolnshire Council). The project has produced an evidence base for historic farmsteads, which has in turn contributed to an understanding of landscape and settlement character in the county.

As well as providing new research tools, the project has also generated several key planning documents to enable the sensitive management and conservation of historic farm buildings by owners, developers and planners. These documents are;

  • The Lincolnshire Farmstead Character Statement
  • The Lincolnshire Farmstead Assessment Framework and Design Guide
  • Local Authority Summaries
  • A suite of Farmstead and Landscape Statements for each of the National Character Areas in Lincolnshire.

The project dataset includes;

  • A GIS dataset of 10850 historic farm buildings in MapInfo format
  • An excel spreadsheet containing the database of farmsteads
  • A report on the mapping project
  • Copies of each of the guidance documents produced

The project has been developed in response to Topic 4F1: Rural Buildings and their Setting of the National Heritage Protection Plan.
