The rescue excavations at Mucking, in the historic county of Essex (NGR: TQ 673803), formed one of the major archaeological projects of the post-war period. The excavations, directed by Margaret and Tom Jones, comprised more than ten years' continuous excavation (between 1965 and 1978) of an 18ha multi-period cropmark site on the Boyn Hill gravel terrace, 30m above sea level, overlooking the Thames estuary at Mucking (now part of the unitary authority area of Thurrock). The Mucking site archive (including artefacts) is held by the British Museum.
The published report on the Mucking Anglo-Saxon cemeteries (Hirst, S M, and Clark, D, 2009 Excavations at Mucking: Volume 3, The Anglo-Saxon cemeteries, London) includes detailed illustrated catalogues in Part i, and comprehensive analysis and discussion of the burials, their relation to the excavated settlement evidence and wider context, in Part ii. The post-excavation and publication work was financed by English Heritage, with additional grants from The Leverhulme Trust and the British Academy, and was hosted by the British Museum. The final publication was managed and produced by Museum of London Archaeology on behalf of English Heritage.
The Data Tables available here (on the downloads page) are also included on a CD-ROM accompanying the publication. They comprise processed basic data about the cemeteries and the grave goods, including comprehensive spreadsheets with details of grave goods and burials attributes, and selected comparative data from other Anglo-Saxon cemetery sites. Details of references cited in Data Tables can be found in the Bibliography file.
