Digital Object Identifiers

Digital Object Identifiers (DOIs) are persistent identifiers which can be used to consistently and accurately reference digital objects and/or content. The DOIs provide a way for the ADS resources to be cited in a similar fashion to traditional scholarly materials. More information on DOIs at the ADS can be found on our help page.

Introduction

Between July and September 1999, Lancaster University Archaeological Unit (now operating as Oxford Archaeology North) were commissioned by North Yorkshire County Council (NYCC), in conjunction with the Nidderdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) Project, to undertake an archaeological survey of part of the Nidderdale AONB. The aim of this survey was to concord various datasets which had been produced by previous work; to verify and record existing features, and to identify any further features within the area. The overarching aim of the survey was to help inform management of the Historic Environment within the AONB.

This survey produced a substantial digital archive which was deposited with NYCC Historic Environment Record (HER). This data has been incorporated into the NYCC HER.

Nicholas Boldrini, the HER Officer at NYCC, began an MSc in Archaeological Information Systems at York University in 2003. This course highlighted issues around digital preservation, and also involved placement work. It was decided to prepare the digital archive for the Nidderdale AONB Archaeological Survey (known as NAAS for the purposes of this Project) for digital archiving as the placement component of this course. This project was chosen because it was felt this dataset was not adequately archived at the HER. This Archiving project has been called the Nidderdale AONB Archaeological Survey Archiving Project (NAASAP).
