Inferior Oolite Group, Birdlip Limestone Formation, Cleeve Cloud Member. Lower part of the Inferior Oolite Group of north Cotswolds, at the horizon of the Pea Grit Formation of the Stroud -Cleeve Hill area (Green 1992: 113).

General Colour Description:

There are two types: a yellow Guiting stone - a warm brown to yellow/orange colour and a white stone (which overlies it at a slightly higher geological horizon) - white to dark cream in colour.

Hand Specimen Description:

A hard, medium grained, fossiliferous, oolitic limestone which is moderate to poorly sorted with a rough feel. It has prominent current bedding. Mineralogically it comprises quartz (often millet seed sand grains), feldspar (microcline), orthoclase feldspar, plagioclase feldspar and heavy minerals set in a calcareous/ferruginous matrix. The bioclasts include fossil shells, crinoids (crinoidal debris) and oolites.
