Quarries

General Comments:

Old cliff-side quarries are found for four and a half miles eastwards from St Aldhelm's Head, where the stone outcrops at the top of a high cliff, to Tilly Whim near Durlston Head. From the west the quarries are West Winspit, East Winspit, Winspit East End, Halsewell, Seacombe, Seacombe Gallery, Cliff Fields, West Hedbury, Hedbury,Topmast and Dancing Ledge (Stanier 2000: 91). There is evidence that the Purbeck-Portland freestone was being exploited by the 17th century (ibid). Cliffstone quarrying probably started soon after 1673 on both cliffs at Winspit.
