Digital Object Identifiers

Digital Object Identifiers (DOIs) are persistent identifiers which can be used to consistently and accurately reference digital objects and/or content. The DOIs provide a way for the ADS resources to be cited in a similar fashion to traditional scholarly materials. More information on DOIs at the ADS can be found on our help page.

Overview

Hearth from Site 78, Wharram Percy
Hearth from Site 78, Wharram Percy

The Wharram Percy Archive comprises the digital versions of Volumes X, XII, and XIII, which are available from the 'Downloads' section along with Site Reports, Supplementary Data and Reports which include material not included in the published volume, the 'Finds Catalogues' section includes an overview of the finds data, along with the catalogues which can be filtered by find type.

Site Reports

Most excavated sites have been reported in the published volumes (Volumes I-XII). The excavations of the 'Plateau sites', though partly summarised in Volume XIII are essentially unpublished; the excavation reports, site illustrations and a selection of site photographs have therefore been included in the ADS archive and are reported site by site. The artefacts from these excavations have been included in the amalgamated finds catalogues, listed as finds from Volume XIII. They include a short excavation report, along with site plans and photographs.

Volume XIII Supplementary Data and Reports

A number of reports and illustrations commissioned for Wharram XIII were not, ultimately, published in the printed volume, or at least were not published as fully as the authors had originally intended. These figures, tables and texts were omitted because of the need to keep the printed volume to about 400 pages; the omissions are indicated at appropriate points in the volume. They have therefore been included in the ADS archive to ensure that they are, nevertheless, publicly accessible.

The Finds catalogues

Finds data primarily from the latest published volumes, Volumes X-XIII, have been included in the ADS archive, but some more complete, village wide catalogues, (pottery, animal bone, human remains, clay pipes and coins) have also been included. Catalogues from these published sites and volumes have been amalgamated into 1 catalogue for each artefact type. Each finds catalogue includes an introductory section detailing data within the catalogue, along with database metadata and associated data tables.

All other finds data, including the retained artefacts, are held with the main archive, at the English Heritage store at Helmsley.
