Archaeology and Nationalism
Collection: Archaeology, Nationalism and Heritage in Islamic Society: a Turkish Case Study
The ADS sometimes archives smaller investigations brought out by scholars when working on larger archaeological projects. This exhibit highlights a different aspect of the famous Catalhoyuk archaeological project. The pictures show how an archaeological project interacts with a local community.
The collection Archaeology, Nationalism and Heritage in Islamic Society records a project carried out by Dr. David Shankland undertaken between 2000 and 2001, in the region of Konya, Turkey. It investigated the changes and the relationship between the present day communities and the remains of the past. The aim of the project was to use the research material to reconsider the practice and theory of anthropology and archaeology.
The research produced more than 500 photographs and various documents describing their interpretations, which can be found in the collection's image gallery.
