Abstract:
Examines the evidence for deliberate selection of men for Roman army posts (senatorial and equestrian officers, centurions, primipilares). For the first two groups social status and influential backing seem more important than assessment of military potential in the early career. For the legionary centurionate directly-commissioned men may play a more significant role than is often thought. Later in careers military ability becomes more important, and the primipilares to have distinctive careers through the procuratorships because their experience is overwhelmingly military. The role of the ab epistulis in officer selection is questioned, and the general conclusion is that individuals are selected on personal recommendation. Author-contributed. See also 81/7676.
