Cromwell's two major buildings are compared and contrasted: at Tattershall Castle the surviving brick tower formed the grand private suite to a range of buildings now destroyed, a display often imitated elsewhere (especially in Wayneflete's tower at Farnham), whereas the less dramatic Wingfield manor was designed as a whole in stone and is an early example of ordered courtyard-house planning.
