Abstract:
Argues that a castle design involved four independent decisions: accommodation, defensibility, form, and embellishment. Four case studies of 14th century buildings (Okehampton, Middleham and Old Wardour castles, plus Dartington Hall) demonstrate that each had (in addition to one major suite of rooms), groups of one- or two-roomed lodgings for different numbers of guests of varied social standing, like a modern hotel.
