Abstract:
The central stair passage house appears in mid 17th century and may be a middle-class innovation ('villa') developed from the sub-medieval house with upper floor and enclosed fireplace. Typically it is sited away from the village centre and apart from its own farm buildings. Stages in its development are traced in a number of Welsh houses and the social implications discussed.
