Abstract:
Associates the development of a royal administration and an increasingly self-aware aristocracy with the invention and control of a standardized symbolic system. Funerary, cross-slab, and 'ritual' types are identified as having an active role in social discourse which led to the emergence of a state. Symbols were restricted to an elite, and preferred to writing.
