Two of the figures are unprovenanced (in Alnwick Castle and British Museum collections respectively), the third comes from near Downhill, Co Derry and has replaced the original Christ-figure on a sheet metal cross. All three relate to the figures on the 12th century shrine of St Manchan. It is argued that an Irish workshop was producing such figures for reliquaries in the first half of 12th century. A report on the scientific examination and conservation by W A Oddy et al is appended. | |
