Gives an account of the Museum of London's Department of Urban Archaeology which has worked on many development sites in the City of London. The level of funding received from developers, while never enough, has allowed some experimentation with certain aspects of protection of strata and structures both before and after excavation: mentioned are sheet piling to define the excavation area, roofing of excavations, conservation of timber structures, and the preservation of masonry structures in new buildings.
