Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
The instrument represents an important advance in studying the microtopography of solid bulk specimens; it permits examination of rough surfaces which cannot be observed in the conventional transmission electron microscope, and can give magnification which, for archaeological purposes, is most useful in the range x 1000 to x 30,000. Specimens can be up to 15mm diameter and several mm thick, but pre-treatment, eg coating with silver or gold, is sometimes necessary. The degree of magnification of the specimen is readily altered, and there is a viewing screen and means of photography (including stereo pairs if desired). At this early stage of technical development for archaeological purposes an indication of the variety of materials that can be examined is given: bone; teeth; hair fibres (though there are difficulties in cleaning these without damage); plant remains in coprolites. "Cereal polish" on a flint tool was disproved under high magnification in the instrument. | ||||
