Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
Archaeologists have been slow to exploit the advantages of X-ray analysis, and this brief review of potentialities may assist them; other articles in the same volume treat some aspects in detail. 1) X-ray diffraction analysis permits identification of the composition of a sample from a tiny powdered fraction. It is best used in conjunction with, eg, chemical methods, but has been used to study urinary stones, pottery, glass, glazes, pigments, jade and gemstones, and niellos. 2) X-ray projection microscopy can provide sharp enlarged images of biological, botanical, metallurgical and ceramic specimens. 3) Radiographs of animal bones can reveal, eg, winter starvation of farm animals, with possible implications for studies of domestication effects. 4) In the study of fossil man, many technical difficulties remain; but radiographs should always be used in studying anomalous conditions. Normal variation of individuals, particularly in the frontal sinus system and cranial thickness, deserves much fuller radiographic study than it has hitherto received. | |||
