Abstract:
The period is surveyed with frequent reference to recent samian studies. There is no positive evidence for a pre-Flavian Roman garrison at York. Some of the Yorkshire forts might be Frontinan foundations. Legio IX may well have supplied vexillations for part of the garrisons of the large Agricolan forts. The garrisoning of Hadrian's Wall forts by legionaries when the Antonine Wall was first occupied is unproven. On the later history of the 2nd century, the samian suggests that the two walls were never held simultaneously, and that there was no occupation of the Scottish forts after 170. It is therefore suggested that Scotland was evacuated under Calpurnius Agricola. Doubts are expressed on a disaster on Hadrian's Wall in 197, rather than under Valerius Pudens or Alfenus Senecio (see also 72/1460). B D
