Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
Analysis of the stamps shows that 1st century samian was coming entirely from La Graufesenque, via Bordeaux to (probably) a S English port and thence by coaster to York. Later, Lezoux pottery came via Nantes and was probably similarly distributed. East Gaulish samian is however present in such quantity as to suggest direct Rhineland-Humber shipment. York's supplies of mortaria came at first from S England, then from Warwickshire and the North; some local production began in 2nd century but Warwickshire potters had control of the market in 3rd and 4th, only being supplanted after 370 by Crambeck. | ||||||||||||
