Abstract:
A statement of present knowledge, including a history of the study of grass-marked wares. The pottery is best regarded as an offshoot of Ulster souterrain ware, transferred to the extreme W of Cornwall in 6th cent AD by settlers coming directly from Ulster, a settlement not historically recorded and thus presumably on a small scale. The pottery replaced the older local sub-Roman style in the Scillies and W half of Cornwall. Developing in isolation from the parent stock, it differs slightly from later Irish souterrain ware. In 9th cent the bar-lug handle reached Cornwall, presumably through the activities of traders or mercantile settlers from some part of NW Europe; and over the area in which grass-marked pottery was then current, hybrid cooking-pots with grass-marked bases and bar-lug handles were used until late 10th or early 11th cents. The final or Sandy Lane style of small grass-marked cooking pots continued until early 12th cent when these were abandoned in favour of everted-rim cooking-pots of the familiar medieval patterns.
