Abstract:
Discusses Argyll and the Isles on one hand and Caithness and Ross on the other, from third quarter of 12th century to first decade of 14th. Highland architecture 'showed much closer correspondence to developments elsewhere in Scotland than is often assumed. Several monasteries and cathedrals were founded, parish churches and chapels appeared in considerable numbers, and stone castles of various kinds were introduced as early - and in some localities as densely - as anywhere else in the country'. However, activity was not uniformly distributed, eg the concentration of hall-houses in Argyll (local stability and prosperity). Density, and architectural style, varied with local geography and other factors. I A G S/Ed
