The nature of the 117 pits recorded by Curle (1911) at Newstead Roman fort is analysed for the first time. Most were wells or cisterns assignable to one of two occupation periods; in seven instances the fillings seem to have had a 'ritual' character like one from Bar Hill Roman fort. Excavation under modern conditions would confirm whether Newstead is an important Celtic ritual site. | |||||||||
