Abstract:
Not trade but taxes, ransoms, bribes and rewards formed the primary use of money in Celtic Europe. New uses evolved in time: the rapid growth of the Gaulish quinarius-based coinage was due to its use for paying troops (or perhaps tribute). Transport charges and customs duties were probably settled in coin, and the production of bronze and potin coinages for small-scale market use was part of the urbanizing process. Sources of precious metal are little known and minting may have been intermittent, but debasements were closely matched between tribes as if monetary treaties were in force. The circumstances of minting are discussed.
