Abstract:
Burials accompanied by MBA-LBA metalwork may be commoner than supposed; forty-seven possible examples in Britain and Ireland are listed and discussed. Ten have Deverel Rimbury associations, of the remainder, at least twenty warrant serious consideration. The earlier burials usually contain ornaments but are otherwise heterogeneous, whereas the Wilburton and especially the Ewart Park phases include a warrior class. The resurgence of inhumation (except in Scotland and Wales) is notable; the widely attested cross-Channel contacts of c 1200 BC increasingly look like immigration by small bands of French settlers practising inhumation and building hillforts like the Breiddin and Dinorben, as well as exchanging metalwork.
