Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
Ongoing observation at a mineral extraction site, that had previously yielded evidence of a Norman mill and several fish weirs, witnessed the uncovering of stone and timber pier bases for a mid-thirteenth-century bridge. During the course of work on this site evidence for an earlier, eleventh-century, bridge was also revealed in the form of two partially collapsed pier bases, timber uprights, and collapsed trestles. A third bridge was located between these two structures and recorded as a watching brief. Construction methods are detailed, and the three together are seen to represent the transition between Saxon and Norman timber technologies. The lifting and conservation needs of the timbers are noted, and it is cautioned that with increasing pressure on County Council resources future work of this kind may be undertaken too late to record and/or preserve the remains adequately. | ||||||||||||
