Abstract:
Peaty silts and clays beneath the Shibdon Pond have been sampled to provide data on the evolution of the post-glacial landscape and vegetational history in the Tyne area. There is a striking contrast between a stable valley floor through much of the prehistoric period and a phase of renewed sedimentation in the Iron Age/Roman periods, representing river system adjustments to major land use changes in the catchment area.
