Abstract:
A tombstone was found during excavations by Cotswold Archaeology at a Roman cemetery site in Cirencester, Gloucestershire, where earlier work had recovered a figurine of an enamelled bronze cockerel. The tombstone lay face-down when discovered, so arrangements were made for the moment when its front was revealed for the first time to be broadcast live on BBC Radio Gloucestershire, and recorded for local television news. The stone proved to have a clear inscription and a sculptured pediment, and has since been donated to the Corinium Museum. This article highlights the huge interest that was generated by the way in which the discovery was presented to the public. LD
