Abstract:		 Article publicising the formation of the Greater Manchester Archaeological Unit in September 1980. The area it will cover includes a wide range of rural and urban environments with varied archaeological remains. The first major excavations to be undertaken by the unit will be part of the Roman fort within the city of Manchester, and a site at the heart of the medieval town; some background to these sites is given. In the past, there has been a lack of high-quality work in the area. A detailed and systematic survey of the county's archaeological resources will therefore be carried out to inform assessment of priorities for future work. LD
