Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
Article describing in detail the damage done to a large Romano-Celtic temple complex at Lamyatt Beacon, near Bruton, Somerset. The site had been partially excavated and then left open in the 1950s and, despite its status as a Scheduled Ancient Monument, had subsequently been subject to robbing and looting over a period of fifteen years. Many of the local collectors were co-operative once the importance of the site had been made clear, throwing some light on the quantity and type of material that had been looted. A rescue excavation revealed the extent of the destruction on site, with a number of structures substantially robbed of stone since 1958. Despite this, an almost complete plan of the site was recovered. LD | ||
