ST 6225. In the interior of the fort, geophysical surveys greatly assisted the choice of an area for total excavation. The Early Neolithic period is represented mainly by pits and small finds. Bronzes, loomweights and pottery of LBA are followed by pottery of Scarborough-Staple Howe tradition in an Earliest Pre-Roman Iron Age phase. Successive Iron Age phases are amply attested by pits, an enigmatic ring-ditch, pottery and small finds. The Roman conquest brought this occupation to an end, but post-Roman activity is seen in imported Mediterranean wares and a Saxon brooch. A trench outlining a cruciform area seems best interpreted as an unfinished church for the short-lived Saxon burh; there is also Late Saxon pottery. In the defences, exploration so far has revealed, three major chronological phases: Pre-Roman Iron Age (several structural periods), early post-Roman (bank with stone and timber revetment), and the substantial mortared stone-faced rampart of the Late Saxon burh. | |||||||||||||||||||||
