Abstract:
A silver-gilt ornament of Insular origin from a Viking-age boat burial at Skjeggenes, Nordland, is here identified for the first time as the pin-head of a pseudo-pennannular brooch. The decoration and typology are discussed in relation to Insular metalwork, and the iconography (human mask flanked by birds) is considered in the context of Early Christian art. 8th or 9th century.
