Abstract:
A handful of gold half-staters of late 2nd-1st century BC, originating from the area of the mouth of the Seine (?Lexovii), bears representations of ships of the type presumably used by Caesar on his British expeditions. The "Apollo" head obverse is backed by a charioteer bearing the ship in his hand. Most of the coins show a squarish, flat-bottomed ship, suitable for cargo or war, and more than superficially resembling ships on the Bayeux tapestry.
