Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
Reports work at Gorham's Cave since 1995, re-examining Waechter's 1950s sections and excavating selected Palaeolithic levels containing lithics, fauna, burnt seed and charcoal. Initial AMS dating results are given in tabular form. Stratigraphic units have been comprehensively sampled for U-series and radiocarbon dating. Areas of charcoal concentration have been identified as combustion zones. Artefacts recovered conform to a Mousterian tradition characterised by the use of discoidal core technology. There is substantial evidence of human activity in the form of lithic artefacts and the remains of food-processing activity. Vanguard cave has been similarly sampled for AMS, ESR, OSL and U-series dating, though except for the uppermost levels most of the units lie beyond the age range of AMS radiocarbon dating. Evidence recovered includes coprolites from a shallow midden deposit. A range of marine mollusca are present. Ibex cave, discovered in 1975, was systematically excavated in 1994, yielding further artefacts and faunal remains. | ||||||||||
