Abstract:
A reaction to a session on material culture during a conference on Interpretative Archaeologies, held in Cambridge during September 1991, exploring the parallels between the formulation of new interpretative theories and the use, or not, of visual imagery. Analyses taken from the commercial marketing of teddy bears, that indicate a marked preference for what appears young, along with the idea that visual images transmit their own messages, are used to interpret the writer's observations that the authors of new theories involve few images in their text, whilst those who seek to consolidate their position use many.
