Abstract:		 An overview of the effects of maritime activity on the archaeology of Denmark ranging from the appearance of specialised coastal sites in the late Roman Iron Age, through the escalation in the increase of landing sites in the seventh--eighth centuries. Coverage includes the role of seafaring, research problems and the definition of maritime archaeology, relations between inland and coastal sites as seen in the archaeological record (particularly Gudme and Lundeborg, and Lejre), ship building, the development and economic role of landing places, settlement structure and finds, and effects on early town formation. There is mention of the new Centre for Maritime Archaeology at Roskilde.
