Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
Archaeological, floral and faunal evidence has been used to study three problems in early agriculture: ploughmarks under barrows and in fields, dating of fields by finds and stratification, and the nature of pre-medieval field boundaries. A table details the evidence for criss-cross ploughmarks from eight English sites on various subsoils and ranging from Neolithic to late Roman in date. Only one is from a round barrow, in contrast to Continental evidence. Two of the Wiltshire sites are discussed in detail and the nature of the plough considered. One-way ploughmarks, usually medieval, have also been recorded from a 1st cent AD site; this does not affect accepted theories about the formation of ridge and furrow. Thirteen lynchet sections illustrate varieties of original field boundary - fences, ditches, walls. There are often usefully stratified finds as well as pollen and mollusca. Surface finds often indicate only the latest, not the earlier, phases of field cultivation. Strip lynchets in Wiltshire have yielded no dating evidence, though medieval pottery has been found on two other sites. Many more field surveys are needed in advance of destruction. | |||||||||||||||||||
