Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
The mine workings range from Roman to modern in date and present considerable hazards in exploration as well as problems of interpretation. Various finds and surveys in the last twenty years have proved so interesting that the Dolaucothi Research Committee has now been formed to survey the area and excavate where necessary. Several tunnels are still accessible, some of which show hand-tooling accepted as Roman and a cross-section comparable with Roman mines in Spain. However, much disturbance has been caused by late open-cast working and dumping. The Roman aqueduct needs further study, especially where it runs through two embanked enclosures, one of which may have been a tank for exploiting water power. The contemporary washing and settling beds for the crushed ore may lie nearby. Some evidence for Roman civil and military occupation of the area needs to be fully examined and extended by excavation. Post-Roman and medieval working is not so far attested, and two suggested "mottes" may be spoil-tips. | |||||
