A reply to M W Thompson's 1965 review of the significance of Marxism for archaeology. Contra Thompson, English archaeology shows three mutually exclusive approaches to prehistory - the ecological, the agnostic and the Marxist-influenced modified diffusionist/evolutionist - exemplified respectively by Clark, Daniel and the followers of Childe. Thompson's rejection of ethnographic parallels is defeatist, and he is equivocal on the possibility of recognising social and other superstructures from the archaeological material, whereas Marxism takes a more positive view. On the matter of geographical determinism, Marxists see a clear progression as man gradually overcomes the limitations of his environment at different rates in different areas. Instead of imposing preconceptions on prehistory, Marxism examines facts in order to prove or refute theory. The diffusionism that Thompson attacks is an outdated 19th century vogue.
