Abstract:
The two prize-winning essays discuss the present period of revolutionary change in the discipline of archaeology. Both authors accept the increasing use of quantitative methods and of data derived from the natural sciences as a necessary part of writing prehistory. Providing a humanistic view is taken of the results, archaeology can only be enriched by the new methods. Note: Starting on 6 Aug 1971 the Times Lit Suppl is running a weekly series of articles on the philosophy of quantification and its application in different fields, including archaeology.
