Abstract:
A two-part article considers the extent of the Royal Society's influence on late 17th century antiquarian thought through its scientific outlook. In contrast to the works of Camden's school, in which archaeological material was only valuable when related to literary sources, the Royal Society's members were concerned to describe and interpret archaeological material without recourse to historical explanations. This encouraged the use of detailed excavation reports with accurate plans, the development of dated style-sequences, and an awareness of stratigraphy as an aid to chronology. These developments were not entirely new, but the Royal Society's influence integrated them more fully into the mainstream of antiquarian techniques. Such studies were however only a small part of the Society's activities, and work published by Society members outside its imprint often had the Camdenian shortcomings. The perpetuation of this tradition is as much a part of the Society's legacy to 18th century antiquarianism as its innovations. D V C
