Abstract:
After the murder of Carausius, Allectus' coin-issues included a new value, the quinarius, of which the Virtus type provides an apparently helpful illustration of a scouting vessel. It rides high in the water, has 5-7 oars and a side and a single sail. Such boats, economical to build and to crew, would have been ideal craft to operate from the forts of the Saxon Shore, thus enabling the expensive galleys to be kept in reserve. Possible connections with either the Pictish vessels or the lusoriae of the 4th century are considered; the evidence is tantalisingly scrappy, but the sum total suggests that the Virtus coins illustrate a Romanised version of either the native curragh or a light carvel-built boat akin to it.
