Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
A source for the very numerous French artefacts made of "Type A Dolerite" (British Group X) has been found in Central Brittany and some working floors excavated. Near Seledin stone-working evidence extends over more than 100 hectares and the rock surface itself shows anvil-protruberances, polishing marks and the like. Below the main outcrop lie two metres of stratification containing stone benches, blocks and flakes, and hearths of Mid-Neolithic date, followed after a considerable pause by quarrying by the fire-setting method in Late Neolithic times. The earlier phases (14C-dated to late 4th-early 3rd millennium) seem to relate to settlements on the Morbihan coast, 50 km away, but in the Late Neolithic period (14C-dated at Seledin to late 3rd millennium) a dense concentration of monuments close to the axe-factories is evident. | ||||||||
