Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
Re-excavation of Heywood Sumner's site at Rough Piece, Linwood, Hampshire, together with new excavations at other New Forest kilns, has shown that Sumner's conclusions were drawn on inadequate examination and need major modification. Reinterpretations of Old Sloden, Sloden I and II and Black Heath Meadow South and East become possible, the suggestion being that the normal New Forest type had, not as Sumner thought, a "platform and chimney" with furnace chamber not more than a metre across, but pilasters supporting a permanent vent-holed floor in a kiln up to 2.7 metres in diameter, much more suited to the large outputs to be expected from the New Forest industry. | ||||||
