Abstract:
An alternative to Renfrew's "chiefdoms" explanation of the Wessex phenomenon (74/2319n) is suggested by an ethnographic example, the Moroccan Berbers. This society is pastoral, egalitarian, not centralised but highly segmented, with holy men performing much of what governing is done (mostly the upholding of pasture rights and mediating with departed spirits). Moreover each holy man operates from the tomb of a revered ancestor whence he gains his power. Replying, Renfrew finds minimal functional differences between Berber holy man and Wessex chief, and prefers to see in Wessex a "group-oriented" chiefdom.
