Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
It has only recently been recognised how much church and social history can be learnt from both above-ground (stone-by-stone) and below-ground studies of churches. Much of this unwritten history has been, and is still being, lost by "restoration" and well-meant works of drainage and heating. Churchyard "improvements" destroy the possibility of population studies. Even well-conducted archaeological excavations are subject to no research policy, and the increasing scale of church redundancies (often involving conversion to other uses) brings the problem to crisis proportions. The CBA and the Society of Antiquaries of London are now tackling the problem and Rivenhall (see abstract 74/2806) has shown what can be ac hieved. See also abstract 75/3398. | ||||
