Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
(Inaugural lecture.) We need to overcome the separation between academic theory, fieldwork practice, and public understanding of archaeology. Some problems stemming partly from different attitudes to data held by theoreticians and practitioners are discussed, with examples. Our main target for the 21st century must be accurate site evaluation/strata prediction, the need for which is sharpened by the European legislation on Environmental Impact Assessment. The 1970s produced vast quantities of rescue-excavated data held in unpublishable archives, but private sector funding is now directing us towards digging sites with 'wealth-creating potential', whereas we should be digging for ideas and for archaeological value. |
