Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
Braudel's three scales of history were found helpful in creating contexts in which to study how different groups of 18th century Marylanders structured their lives, using the particular example of the development of dining etiquette as a reflexion of segmentation in society. Assemblages of ceramics from four sites of middle and upper wealth groups were analysed in short- and long-term contexts (and compared with probate inventories) to arrive at a segmentation index for the four properties, over a period of about a century: an increasing variety of dish sizes and types at the table indicates developing segmentation, etiquette being used as a strategy of exclusion. | ||
