Abstract:
A review-article on M Todd (ed), Research on Roman Britain 1960-1989 (see 90/479) laments the fact that most of the contributors are 'unfortunately trapped in a culture-historical pre-processual paradigm' and that there is much misunderstanding of the 'New Archaeology', itself a near-extinct term. There appears also a general indifference to the paradigm shift of 1982 marked by Hodder's (ed) Symbolic and structural archaeology. The papers concentrate on excavated evidence rather than on how we can study material culture.
