Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
In answer to an article by Thorpe and Williams-Thorpe (see 91/1009) the idea that megaliths were never transported by human agency, but were glacial erratics, is refuted on two counts. Firstly, the idea that the Devils Arrows, Yorkshire, were glacially transported from a site 15-20 km north is dismissed on the grounds that none of the henge monuments between the two places contain stones of this type. Secondly, there were no historical reports of stones like the sarsens of Stonehenge, Wiltshire, in the surrounding area. Richard Thorpe and Olwen Thorpe-Williams (298) reply that small erratic boulders of the Devils Arrow type are to be found near the site and that the sarsens of Stonehenge are probably remnants of previous Cenozoic cover.
